Harewood Light Rum 1780 (light)
Description
Distilled in Barbados in 1780, this Harewood rum only resurfaced in 2011, when a descendant of the Harewood family discovered dozens of dusty, mold-covered bottles, a photograph of which quickly went viral. Mark Lascelles found twenty-eight bottles on two shelves in the most remote part of the family cellars, only about twenty of which were deemed in good enough condition to be sold.
Archives, as well as a meticulous examination of the bottles, confirmed our famous distillation date. The rum was then shipped to England in casks before being bottled directly at the Harewood distillery. This is evidenced by the authenticated antique (and British) hand-blown glass, as well as the contents of the bottles. After thorough analysis, the experts decided to separate the rums, creating two distinct categories: a Harewood "light" rum (meaning clear/light), bottled at 69.38% ABV, and a Harewood "dark," darker and presumably older, offered at 57.76% ABV.
Between 2013 and 2014, two lots were auctioned by the renowned Christie's: the first lot of 12 bottles in December 2013, followed by a second lot of 16 bottles in December 2014.
We are offering one of these bottles here in its "light" version.
