Waldorf Astoria Cuban Rum Gold
Description
Old Cuban rum imported by Saccone, Speed & Jenney (New York) and bottled by Compania Licorera Matanzas, located in the city of Matanzas, Cuba. Founded in 1926, it became the home of the Yucayo distillery, producer of the rum of the same name, which would achieve great fame starting in the 1930s (both locally and in the United States).
The rum for sale here was specially commissioned by the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, once the largest hotel in the world, which was demolished in 1929 to make way for the Empire State Building. Located on Fifth Avenue, it symbolized Gilded Age luxury until the rise of New York's iconic skyscraper forever transformed the skyline.
The hotel had its own brand of spirits and also made history thanks to the book "The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book" : written by Albert Stevens Crockett in 1935, it lists numerous cocktail recipes, including... the first recipe for the Cuba Libre.
The bottle offered for sale here comes directly from the hotel's inventory and was acquired at an auction held in October 2020. At that auction, the prestigious establishment offered more than 15,000 items, including 19th-century French furniture, works of art, chandeliers, and various decorative elements from its renowned bar and restaurant. All proceeds from the sale were donated to St. Bartholomew’s Conservancy to support its efforts to restore and preserve the facades and gardens of St. Bartholomew’s Church and Community House, an iconic landmark located directly across the street from the Waldorf Astoria New York.
