Description

Following the 1924 and 1929 vintages, Jacques Bally distilled this third historic vintage in the column still he himself adapted. This rum, like its predecessors, is unique in that it is aged in French oak barrels, a practice unprecedented at the time: he was indeed the first (and still the only one) to introduce them to Martinique, a result of his travels in the Cognac and Armagnac regions. His competitors exclusively used American oak barrels and were quick to mock him for his audacity.

But this 1931 vintage will also go down in history as the very first vintage housed in a pyramidal bottle—and what a pyramid it is! Legend has it that Jacques Bally designed it, inspired by the cone of Mount Pelée during its second eruption in 1929. He created it and launched it onto the market in the midst of the Great Depression of the 1930s, associating this brand-new shape with the Sonnet of Félix d’Arvers’ Sonnet (one of the most popular of the 19th century), offering for the occasion a very personal version… The “Bally Rum Sonnet,” which we have transcribed below:

My rum has its secret, my liter its mystery;
A perfect aroma, very slowly crafted;
So for a long time I had to keep it silent,
That's why, until now, no one has known.

Yet it could not remain unnoticed.
Eclipsing all other rums, it remains solitary,
Flowing under every sky, graying the whole earth,
Appearing everywhere, and everywhere well received.

Good and warming liqueur, softening the heart,
It will go its way, tranquil and without waiting for
The jealous murmurs that rise in its wake.

Whoever has found it and remained faithful to it,
Upon emptying their glass, will say:
What is this flame? And will not forget it.
