Description

A very rare rum from the Saint-James distillery, this "Pure Rum" was distilled in 1944 and bottled more than 20 years later (in 1965) for a German company. The label displays an "88 British Proof" for the occasion, or 50.2 of our proof.

A piece of history released in a tense time, to say the least: distilled in the midst of World War II, some sources (unfortunately unverifiable to date) claim that the rum was looted from a ship during the war; still others highlight hypothetical links with the Vichy regime, Saint-James opening its first rum bar on the Champs-Élysées during the occupation, despite Pétain's ban on the sale of alcohol.

The only confirmed information (to date) comes from Marc Sassier, guardian of the Saint-James temple: Lambert did indeed sometimes sell in bulk, offering drafts for himself outside Saint-James. Hence the mention on the label "Lambert & Cie Société d'Exportation des Rhums Saint James".
