At the beginning of the HSE adventure, there is the Domaine de La Maugrée, founded at the beginning of the 19th century in Gros Morne in Martinique. Renamed Habitation Saint Étienne in 1863, we owe the first traces of rhum agricole to a certain Amédée Aubéry who bought the house in 1882 to transform it into a distillery.
In 1927, the Habitation Saint-Etienne was bought by the Simmonet family who developed and modernized it, ensuring its growing success and even visibility in mainland France. The distillery was bought again in 1984, this time by the Dormoy family until its closure in 1988. It was then that production was transferred to the La Favorite distillery until the early 1990s.
In 1994, Yves and José Hayot bought out HSE and moved the distillation column to Le Simon, where it still resides today.
