English Harbour is the brand of Antigua Distillery Ltd., the only distillery on the island of Antigua.
At the end of slavery, in the middle of the 19th century, farmers arrived from the Portuguese island of Madeira to cultivate sugar cane. Their contract then provides for five years of work and the return trip, but they will eventually settle down and start marketing rum.
Built in 1932, the distillery is now owned by Anthony Bento and his family. They produce a molasses rum from a 36-hour fermentation and distillation originally carried out in a Savalle copper still made up of four columns, and since 1991 in a John Dore three-column still including two Savalle columns of origin. Aging takes place in 3,000 old bourbon barrels.
