Demerara Distillers

The story of Demerara Distillers begins in 1670 when the multitude of working sugar estates produced their own rum and a group of cane growers formed an export cooperative.

At the height of production, in the 17th and 18th centuries, there were more than 200 small distilleries in operation, each with a specific still giving the rums very varied profiles. Rums among others intended for the British Navy and the daily ration of its sailors. Distributed primarily in the United Kingdom but also in Canada, Demerara rum was little known in the rest of Europe.

Bearing the brunt of the sugar crisis at the end of the 19th century, Guyana gradually lost its distilleries, going from 200 to 9 in 1949, then 5 in 1966, and finally just one, the Diamond distillery, today fully managed by Demerara Distillers Limited.

Demerara Distillers remains an internationally renowned producer that has managed to maintain all of the old production methods and keep many historic stills alive.
